![]() There are some fantastic sequences throughout the film that animate the illuminated letters in the Book of Kells, bringing the detail of the artifact to life. The Secret of Kells presents a completely unique playground for animation both in the source material and its overall flat style. The Book of Kells and Illumination Animation To do this, I’ll be referring to the process of adapting the Book of Kells into a fictional film as ‘illumination animation’, where the illuminated text and all of its properties are translated into animation. By looking at how the Book is adapted and translated into different areas of the film through the process of animation, we can get a better sense of how Secret of Kells really continues the preservation of the text by extending it into a work of fiction. I actually had the opportunity to see the book in person 2 years ago at the Trinity College library in Dublin where it’s on permanent display, and it’s left a pretty strong impression on me -imagine how old that book is!
